Reading is Magic Summer Camp is a summer intensive reading program that includes reading tutoring, an afterschool program, and a summer lab school. The program offers three, two-week long camps in which middle school students are trained to be reading tutors. Students in the program have gained, on average, one year’s growth in reading after the two-week summer interventions.

Reading is Magic is a free summer intensive reading program for 2nd to 8th grade students in the Santa Fe Public Schools and is a collaboration with Reading Quest and Opportunity Santa Fe. Reading Quest is a nonprofit organization dedicated to children’s literacy, and Reading is Magic evolved out of Hooked on Books, a middle school expedition community service project that involved bookshelves around the community and reading contests. Arts & Sciences will continue to run Reading is Magic as a summer lab school and is an independent expeditionary learning school that utilizes expeditionary learning, global perspectives, and a multicultural art and science curriculum.
Reading is Magic started in 2012 and is heading into its 11th year. The leadership team includes Rayna Dineen, Reading Quest’s founder and executive director; Perli Cunanan, Executive Director; Todd Stiewing, Principal; and Jordy Angel-Coldwell, Summer Camp Director. Rayna Dineen started Reading is Magic when she was the principal of Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences in 2012.
The mission of Arts & Sciences is to nurture academic excellence and healthy social-emotional development in an environment of respect, inclusion, and diversity. Arts & Sciences was voted Best of Santa Fe 2025 in three categories: 1st Place – Best Middle School; 2nd Place – Best Preschool; and Top 3 – Best Elementary School, and The Best Schools ranked the school 14th in the nation in “The Best Private Elementary Schools” report.

When I first started I was really behind, but now I am way ahead.” and “I appreciate my tutor Micah who is my best friend. He helped me out with new words and now I am getting better grades on my school work.” Another Reading is Magic student said, “When I grow up I will be a book seller, and I will save money to buy a nice home for me and my family and I will buy books for Reading is Magic.” School founder Rayna Dineen said, “We believe an education is more than just mastering academic knowledge. Our students learn how to be compassionate, kind citizens and to stand up for what they know is right.” An Arts & Sciences alumnus from the Class of 2010 said the goal of the school is “not only to teach numbers and words, but to teach tolerance, respect and compassion, helping each student grow up to be a happy, well-rounded citizen… I was never scared to be who I was.” Ron Berger, Chief Academic Officer of Expeditionary Learning Schools, described Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences as “one of the gems of the Expeditionary Learning School Network” and “one of the most impressive centers for excellence in student work, thinking and contribution.” Alumni parents and current parents describe their children as happy learners and kind kids, and one parent stated, “I cannot put into words my feelings of appreciation for all the teachers and staff. Arts & Sciences really is a remarkable place!” A parent in grade 8 noted that teachers have very high academic expectations, support students to reach them, and involve students in service and volunteering in the city, and another alumni parent from the Class of 2019 said the middle school provided the atmosphere for their son to discover himself and become a happy, well-rounded teenager.
