The Albany Police Athletic League’s work within the community began in 1988, with the goal of creating a community bond between the youth and law enforcement of Albany. The Albany Police Athletic League brings together kids, cops, and community through after-school activities, summer camps, clubs, and sports programs, and serves approximately 2,000 Albany youth every year. The Albany PAL Center has teamed up with Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York to bring girls ages 5–13 a weekly club.
Sports programs engage hundreds of youth each year in structured, coach-led leagues and clinics. The organization offers two flagship youth leadership initiatives, the Police Explorers program and the Youth Leadership Council (YLC). It also offers a free, group-based mentoring program that meets three times a week at the Albany PAL Center for 60–90-minute sessions, and an after-school program that provides academic support and enrichment through hands-on projects. Office hours are Monday–Friday from 9:00 AM–5:30 PM, and the office is closed on weekends.
Testimonials describe experiences such as working with kids as a mentor and staff member at Albany PAL camp, building bonds with children in the summer program, and noting that children are always having fun with staff and counselors present. One parent notes the organization’s willingness to work with a child with disabilities and the support this provides as a single parent. Other comments describe the programs as outstanding for kids and mention that mentors are present.
