The Albany Police Athletic League’s work within the community began in 1988. Its mission statement says that the Albany Police Athletic League provides dynamic programs that empower youth in the community and, in addition to sports and mentoring, offers special events such as bowling and seasonal camps to keep young people active and connected. Since 1988, it has focused on creating a community bond between youth and law enforcement in Albany and has cultivated relationships between the law enforcement community and younger generations. The organization reports that it serves approximately 2,000 Albany youth every year and brings together kids, police officers, and community members through after-school activities, summer camps, clubs, and sports programs. The Albany PAL Center has teamed up with Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York to offer a weekly club for girls ages 5–13. The mentoring program is a free, group-based initiative that pairs Albany City youth with adult volunteers and meets three times a week at the Albany PAL Center.

Testimonials describe the programs as rewarding for staff and volunteers, with comments from a Counselor in Training, a receptionist, and summer job staff highlighting their experiences working with children and mentoring at Albany PAL. One parent, Janel Andersen, notes the organization’s willingness to work with a child with disabilities and the support she feels as a single mother. Another community member, Colleen Thorn, describes the offerings as outstanding programs with great mentors.
