BronxWorks operates these after-school and summer day camp programs for children ages 5–12 years old at several program sites. For children ages 5–12, Cornerstone Community Centers offer an after-school program that combines structured recreational activities with additional academic support, and a summer camp program that combines recreational activities with hands-on, engaging learning opportunities to reinforce lessons learned in school and prevent summer learning loss. The school-age program at the Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center has a limited number of subsidized slots and accepts vouchers from HRA, ACD, and Local 1199, and center-based program staff escort children from local feeder schools via the Safe Passage program.
BronxWorks has served the Bronx community as a trusted resource since 1972 and formally joined the settlement house system in 1993 by joining United Neighborhood Houses of New York. Known as the Citizens Advice Bureau from its 1972 inception, the organization was officially re-branded as BronxWorks in November 2009. The organization’s mission is to help individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being by feeding, sheltering, teaching, and supporting neighbors to build a stronger Bronx community.
The leadership team connected to these programs includes Melinda Barr, Associate Vice President, Younger Youth Programs; Ursula Cooper-Hunter, Vice President, Children & Youth Services; Kimberly Haynes, Program Coordinator; Yahaira Rodriguez, Program Coordinator; Shamiah Jones Hall, Program Coordinator; Kimberly Mejia Palacios, Program Assistant; Kiesha Roberts, Associate Vice President of Cornerstones, Children and Youth; Marilyn Martinez, Program Director; and Tyrina Bailey, Program Director. Morris Senior Center, part of BronxWorks, has been chosen as one of the city’s eight new Innovative Senior Centers and is the only one in the Bronx.
