Brooklyn AYSO offers youth soccer programs focused on soccer. The program is part of the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), which is the oldest national youth soccer program in the United States and a nonprofit.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
AYSO was established in 1964 out of a garage in Torrance, California. Brooklyn AYSO states that it delivers quality youth soccer programs which promote a fun, family environment built on the foundation of AYSO’s Six Philosophies. These Six Philosophies are Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship, and Player Development. Every player on every team must play at least 50 percent of every game, and each year AYSO forms new teams as evenly balanced as possible. Children are not registered on their merits as soccer players, but rather on their interest and enthusiasm, and AYSO welcomes all youth and adults who want to play soccer and gives them the opportunity to register and play. AYSO requires coaches to create a positive experience for every player, and AYSO programs are designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO. All players are expected to be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team. All of AYSO's coaches, referees, managers and other local officials are volunteer members dedicated to youth, their communities, and AYSO's philosophies and objectives.
AYSO has thriving programs for kids and adults in nearly 900 communities across the country and internationally in the Virgin Islands and Trinidad and Tobago. There are over eight million AYSO alumni, and AYSO is a name that is recognized nationwide. Brooklyn AYSO uses the phrase “Everyone Plays Soccer in Brooklyn!” to describe its approach.
The Brooklyn AYSO leadership team includes Aaron Baker as Regional Commissioner, Michael Hopkins as Regional Treasurer, Bethany N. as Regional Registrar, David Hale as Regional Referee Administrator, and Roderick Hurley as Regional Coach Administrators. Jim Keenley serves as Regional Safety Director, and Richard Brittson serves as Regional Child and Volunteer Protection Advocates. Bruce Shearouse is Community Affairs Director, and Ainslie Binder is Area Director. Program roles also include Noah Swertloff for Camps and Clinics and as 5U Coed DC (Fall/Spring Only), Maia Ruvolo as Uniform Coordinator, Matt Leonard as C8 Coed DC, Melinda Byam as C12 Coed DC, and Michael Reifman as G12 Girls DC (Fall/Spring Only). Rachel Warren is C14 Coed DC (Fall/Spring), while Lazar Treschan is C14 Coed DC (Winter) and G14 Girls DC (Fall/Spring Only). Alex Chung is C19 Coed DC, and Corey Tatarczuk is G19 Girls DC.
