Its mission is to transform lives and build community through the expressive, educational and therapeutic powers of music. It has five programs: Community Music School, Suzuki, Music Partners, Music Therapy, and a Community Music Center, and the Suzuki program offers the study of violin, cello, bass, guitar, flute, and piano. The Community Music Center offers private instrument lessons, a Saturday Band Academy, and a summer camp to students aged 1 to 14 at little to no cost.
Brooklyn Conservatory of Music has credentialed music therapists who are clinically trained professionals in music therapy, and it is among New York City’s largest providers of clinical music therapy. Music Partners, created in 1988 in response to the rising number of NYC public schools offering no music instruction, is the largest off-site music program of any community school in New York City and now serves nearly 4,000 students at 35 schools, youth centers, and senior centers in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens. The organization provides music education, music therapy services, and musical engagement at more than 80 sites across all five boroughs, including over 35 outreach sites in public schools, senior centers, childcare centers, and other community settings, and partners with art museums, refugee resettlement agencies, retirement communities, and a Community Music Center in Cypress Hills/East New York that offers programming to more than 70 families at little or no cost.
Brooklyn Conservatory of Music produces and hosts more than 200 low-cost musical events each year, with events including over 300 annually such as intimate concerts, block parties, and children’s workshops. It is expanding its central campus to BKCM Prospect Park West in Fall 2026, which will be home to the national BKCM Music Therapy Institute, and is planning Open Stages 2026 with more than 15 stages of free outdoor music and hundreds of artists and partners.
