Discovery Camps takes place within an organization that also offers a 3D cinema, a restored rooftop Kellogg observatory, the SensERIE early childhood sensory space with three distinct Erie County-based environments, and access to more than 700,000 specimens in collections pertaining to the Greater Niagara Region. The same organization operates the 264-acre Tifft Nature Preserve, which has five miles of hiking trails, a self-guided nature and fitness trail, a 75-acre freshwater cattail marsh, and man-made lakes.

The Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences oversees Discovery Camps under the leadership of Gary Siddall, President and CEO, and Meghan Dye, Vice President, Learning & Tifft Nature Preserve, along with additional listed Board of Trustees and staff with titles. The Buffalo Museum of Science, which is part of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences, was the first museum in the nation to have an elementary school both physically and programmatically linked. The mission in the 2022–2026 Strategic Plan is to harness the collective skills and resources of the Buffalo Museum of Science and Tifft Nature Preserve to be the leading cultural voice for science in the region.

The history of the organization includes the founding of the Young Men’s Association in 1836 and the first meeting of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences in 1861. The Society opened the doors to a facility at the end of Humboldt Parkway on January 19, 1929, now known as the Buffalo Museum of Science, and entered a commitment in 1982 for operation of the 264-acre Tifft Nature Preserve. Since 1921, the Museum has undergone several renovations, attached the Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet Elementary School in 1990, renovated permanent exhibit experiences since 2010, reopened the rooftop Kellogg observatory in July 2018, opened the SensERIE exhibit in 2021, and approved the 2022–2026 Strategic Plan in November 2021.

Programs connected with this organization are supported in part by public funds from the County of Erie, the City of Buffalo, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and members and friends. The Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet Elementary School is physically and programmatically linked to the Museum and serves more than 1,100 students.
