The Whaling Museum Society, Inc. was founded in 1936. The museum’s mission statement is that The Whaling Museum brings arts, science, and history of whaling heritage as Long Island's biggest story. The museum holds 6,000 artifacts, including a historic whaleboat described as the only fully equipped whaling vessel with its original gear on display in New York, as well as one of the notable scrimshaw collections in the northeast. The Whaling Museum is among the 4% of museums in the country accredited by the American Alliance of Museums for meeting National Standards and Best Practices, and it reports serving 20,000 Long Islanders annually. The collection was formed by members of the local community who wanted a place to preserve the region’s maritime history and Cold Spring Harbor’s whaling past, and the museum has collaborated on recognizing the anniversary of a 1946 event when a whale came to Huntington. Leadership and contacts for these programs include Katie Kelly for information and bookings, Cristina Ainslie for community engagement and public relations, Brenna McCormick-Thompson and the Education Team for the Education Department, and Nomi Dayan for administration. One parent review states, “This place is great. Such a treasure in a cute town. So educational, my kids had no idea of the whaling history in the area and the importance of conservation,” signed by Matt K.
