Learn to Amaze is a magic program where children and youth take Discover Magic courses such as the Purple Wand, Green Wand, Orange Wand, and Blue Wand Courses. Activities in the program include performing magic, reading people’s minds, making money appear out of nowhere, traveling through time with a magic bandana, cutting a lady in half as a magic principle, giving friends super hero powers, making invisible objects appear in a magic pencil pouch, teleporting objects across the room, finding hidden magical treasures, levitating a cup of popcorn, moving objects with the mind, making a monkey appear, and operating a time machine. The program also offers ballroom dancing, water safety, summer camps for elementary children and teenage youth, and private magic lessons.
The program describes itself as a life skills course cleverly camouflaged as magic classes, where performing magic is linked with exploring creativity, practicing speaking skills, and developing sequential thinking. Students are taught the eight traits of a true magician: respectful, prepared, enthusiastic, confident, humble, creative, authentic, and giving. The Purple Wand Course focuses on the eight basic effects that make up all magic tricks, the Green Wand Course focuses on the eight secret magic principles that make all magic tricks possible, the Orange Wand Course focuses on the three parts that make up a magic trick with a focus on presentation, and the Blue Wand Course focuses on different types of magic from dinner table tricks to big stage illusions. The program states that students come home with cool tricks, new friends, and unforgettable experiences and that it awakens a child’s inner performer.
Magician David Black leads Learn to Amaze as a professional entertainer, educator, actor and magician. David holds degrees in Theater and Psychology from Binghamton University and is an Order of Merlin Shield member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and he is a past President of the Southern Tier Magic Circle. David has performed for over 40 years, has been teaching children, youth and adults on a variety of topics for over thirty-five years, and has directed education programs for several area churches for the past thirty years.
David has been a featured reader for the Celebrity Read-Along DVD playing at the Discovery Center BOOKS and Beyond Readers Theater and the Greater Binghamton Airport.
