The mission of Long Island Children’s Museum Programs is “Connecting all our communities’ children, and those who care for them, to one another and a life of wonder, imagination and exploration. Here, children discover their passions and their relationship to the world we share.” LICM is a not-for-profit learning space devoted to the busy work of play, and its open environment encourages children to move freely and test their independence.

LICM is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and is currently the only children’s museum in New York State to achieve this accreditation, as well as one of 16 children’s museums nationwide with this status. The museum earned Accreditation from AAM in 2021 and received an Excellence in Exhibition award from AAM in 2016. In 2012, it received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, and in 2008 it received the Association of Children’s Museums’ Promising Practices award for its exhibition Our Backyard. The New York State Council on the Arts has designated LICM as a Primary Institution. In 2023, LICM earned the Platinum Candid Seal of Transparency and Four-Star Status on Charity Navigator. LICM was named a recipient of the 2025 Neighborhood Builders Award by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. In 2020, LICM received the Education Partner award from the Board of Cooperative Educational Services of Nassau County (BOCES), and LICM also received the Education Partner award from BOCES of Nassau County.
