About
Sciencenter Youth Programs and Summer Camp include hands-on experiences related to science, technology, engineering, and math, along with a summer camp. Participants take part in activities such as Science Together: Ice Melting and Math Fun with MathHappens!, and explore water engineering in the Watergates Gallery. They can also engage with reptiles and fish in the Animal Room, learn about weather patterns in the Energy Gallery, explore engineering in the Build Space, get up close to the animal collection in the Mezzanine Gallery, send balls through a fifteen-foot air tube maze in the Airways Maze, and role play as veterinarians in the Curiosity Corner’s Pet Vet, as well as join interactive experiences on the environment, climate change, astronomy, and the health of the oceans.

The Sciencenter Youth Programs and Summer Camp are part of a broader effort whose mission is to cultivate an engaged community of curious, collaborative, critical thinkers. Through partnerships with rural and low-income communities, the Sciencenter serves 68,000 individuals annually with hands-on science education for all ages and welcomes all second-grade students in Tompkins County for curriculum-based field trips as a partner with Kids Discover the Trail!. The Sciencenter is a key partner for NISE Net (National Informal STEM Education Network), is involved in developing a NISE science activity toolkit for museums across the country, and tours 11 traveling exhibitions to museums and cultural organizations across the U.S. and Canada. The Sciencenter features over 250 interactive science exhibits, including Ocean Bound, a 1,500 square-foot bilingual (Spanish/English) traveling exhibition with supporting activities that focus on biomedical engineering and its use in medicine and public health, and most exhibits are created in its own fabrication shop by a team of exhibit developers. A robust field trip program and summer camp engage children throughout the year. The Sciencenter is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), is a member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) and the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM), and has received the New York State Senate’s Empire Award from Senator Lea Webb in 2024, as well as repeated regional recognition including gold for Best Museum in the Finger Lakes Favorites awards in 2024 and 2025 and Best Place to Go on a Rainy Day in the 2025 Best of Ithaca awards.
