The Science Museum of Long Island is a science education center and 501(c)3 that has been providing hands-on science education since its inception in 1962. It was first chartered by the Board of Education in 1963 under the name of the North Shore Junior Science Museum, and its name was changed to the Science Museum of Long Island during the 1980s. Its mission is to breathe life into science and kindle curiosity and a love of learning in young minds by captivating and inspiring children to explore science through engaging and immersive activities. The organization provides a broad spectrum of science educational services throughout the tri-county area.

The Leeds Pond Preserve, where the Science Museum operates, is a Nassau County owned property, and the agreement placing the museum there was one of the first public-private partnerships in Nassau County. The preserve is a 36-acre historic property with diverse ecological landscapes, including forests, riparian wetlands, intertidal beaches, and a large open grass meadow rising about 60 feet above Manhasset Bay. Three structures on the property are used by the Science Museum of Long Island for its programs. The Leeds Pond Preserve is open to the public seven days a week from sunrise to sunset, and parking is prohibited at the preserve after dark.
