The Science Museum of Long Island Youth Programs take place at the Science Museum of Long Island, which is located on the Leeds Pond Preserve. Leeds Pond Preserve is a 36-acre historic property that includes forests, riparian wetlands, intertidal beaches, and a large open grass meadow rising about 60 feet above Manhasset Bay. The Leeds Pond Preserve is open to the public seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. The Science Museum of Long Island does not have any exhibits that are open to the public.

The Science Museum of Long Island is a non-profit organization that has provided hands-on science education since its inception in 1962. In 1963, the North Shore Junior Science Museum was chartered by the Board of Regents of the state of New York, and during the 1980s the name was changed to the Science Museum of Long Island. The organization is a 501(c)3 whose mission is to breathe life into science and kindle the spark of curiosity and a love of learning in young minds. Its programs emphasize experience-based, hands-on learning in a friendly, camp-like setting and can be carefully tailored to meet the specific needs of each group served, offering a broad spectrum of science educational services throughout the tri-county area. The museum’s location on the Leeds Pond Preserve is part of a landmark public-private partnership in Nassau County that has continued for seven decades through many administrations.
