About
Achilles NYC Metro Workouts (Achilles Kids and Adaptive Athletics) offers chances to run, walk, roll, take part in adaptive cycling, and join Achilles Kids workouts. The program also includes wheelchair racing practices, which are currently on pause with information available via contact. All abilities are welcome, and the program welcomes people of all ages living with a disability, including but not limited to blindness or low vision, deafness or hard of hearing, cognitive, developmental and intellectual disabilities, limb loss, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injuries, and it also serves and welcomes military veterans.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Workouts are offered on weekdays and weekends, with options in the morning, midday, afternoon, and evening, and participants are asked to sign up at least 12 hours before a workout and can sign up up to four weeks in advance.
Members can choose as many workout locations as they would like in their Rosterfy profile. Specialized workouts for children with disabilities through the Achilles Kids program are offered, and adaptive cycling sessions are available in select parks. Achilles International states that its mission is to transform the lives of people with disabilities through athletic programs and social connection. Since its founding in 1983, Achilles International has developed a portfolio of programs that includes Achilles Kids, the Achilles Freedom Team for wounded military personnel and veterans, the TriAchilles Team that expands the running program into biking and swimming, Achilles Chapter workouts, and the Hope & Possibility race, which takes place in several cities worldwide. One participant, Brooke Voss from Phoenix, AZ, says, “What Achilles does is create community around athletics. In this community we are athletes first, people second, and people with disabilities last. And that fades into a non-issue as we get to know each other.”
