About
The After School Program focuses on teaching the mechanics of riding a bike, the rules of the road, and best practices for riding in a group and on the streets. Participants learn how to ride a bike, practice basic bike-handling skills, and work on how to ride safely in a group and on city streets. The program includes practice rides in NYC parks and on greenways, with bikes and helmets provided and kids required to be 10 years or older, and each class includes 15–18 kids plus 1–2 counselors whose attendance is required.
• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: One 2-hour slot available per day between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM during April–June and September–October

The After School Program is run by Bike New York, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting bicycling and bicycle safety through education, community outreach, and events. Instructors include 2 trained instructors. Through programs such as Bike Path, Earn-A-Bike, Green Jobs Training Programs, High School Internships, Recycled Arts Workshops, Summer Youth Employment Program, and Kids Ride Club, Recycle-A-Bicycle has been dedicated to the health, development, stewardship, and empowerment of NYC youth for more than 20 years. This program is only available to established after-school programs, and individuals unaffiliated with an after-school program may not request or join a session. Bikes and helmets used in the program are connected to Bike New York’s Recycle-A-Bicycle Shop, where every purchase directly supports education programs, and on average Recycle-A-Bicycle has salvaged 1,800 bicycles each year from the waste stream, diverting a total of 45,000 pounds of waste from NYC’s landfills. Each bicycle from the Recycle-A-Bicycle Shop comes with a 30-day warranty and is priced in accordance with the parts and labor dedicated to reconditioning each one.
