About

Bloomingdale School of Music offers in-person and virtual private music lessons, group classes, music ensembles, early childhood classes, and after school music instruction. Students can take piano lessons, private lessons on piano, violin instruction, guitar classes, hand drumming, singing, and recorder learning. The program also offers one-hour group classes in violin, keyboard, recorder, and vocal instruction, as well as classes for students and parents that focus on simple music-making skills through hand percussion and vocalization, plus online lessons, online classes, and online ensembles.

Lessons are taught by passionate and experienced faculty. The leadership team includes Laura Gravino, Senior Director of Programming; Michael Morales, School Partnership Manager; and Erika Atkins, Executive Director. The heart of Bloomingdale School of Music’s mission is providing open-access to music education to those in the community.

Bloomingdale School of Music serves a diverse, multi-generational community of over 800 students every week and offers music education to all ages and levels, from three months old in the Early Childhood program to seniors. A portion of the annual budget is dedicated to financial aid and scholarships, and the school offers music programs, partnerships, and performances to all who want to learn. The program offers free weekly music instruction to older adults on site in the community through a partnership with Morningside Retirement and Health Services and has a pilot year of creative aging programming that includes guitar classes and a music appreciation lecture series. Bloomingdale School of Music has been featured on NBC’s “George to the Rescue.”

Bloomingdale School of Music provides high-quality after school music instruction and strengthens existing programs through school and community partnerships, including Morningside Montessori, PS75 Emily Dickinson, The Cathedral School of St. John The Divine, Family Life Academy Charter Schools (FLACS II), Morningside Retirement and Health Services, The School at Columbia University, and Bloomingdale Family Program.

Parent and student testimonials describe experiences with financial aid for piano lessons and participation in the Professional Training Program, weekly lessons and ensemble classes, and long-term involvement from early childhood through preparation for majoring in musical theater. One parent describes watching a child “blossom into becoming a musician,” and another notes that an older child started classes as a baby and later planned to major in musical theater, stating that Bloomingdale School of Music “gave him his start.”
