For 60 years, Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) has fostered youth development and artists. Harlem School of the Arts empowers youth to reach their full potential in the arts, education, and life, through interdisciplinary arts training that celebrates the rich complexity of their community. HSA values inclusivity, artistic excellence, and community engagement, fostering a vibrant and supportive environment for students to explore their creative passions and reach their full potential.

For students ages 8–17 who dream of pursuing art as a career, HSA offers specialized programs called HSA Prep and HSA Pre-Prep. HSA Pre-Prep students ages 10 to 12 receive advanced arts instruction in music, dance, theater, and visual arts through the extremely selective HSA Prep pre-professional scholarship program. Students who are admitted to HSA Pre-Prep are fully funded and receive individual mentoring, study hall sessions, assistance with college applications, and opportunities to interact with top-tier professional artists. HSA Prep is a highly selective, pre-professional scholarship program providing students ages 12–18 with advanced level arts training in music, dance, theatre and the visual arts, and students in HSA Prep receive a full scholarship to attend HSA, individual mentoring, study hall access, college application support, and opportunities to engage with high caliber professional artists.

Class lengths are designed with the child’s age and attention span in mind – toddler classes are a fun-filled hour, while older students have two-hour sessions. For students who need instruments for other HSA classes, HSA states that children need to provide their own instrument, and for those who do not have access to an instrument, HSA can provide a list of stores that rent a variety of instruments.
