Renzo Gracie Academy was established in 1996 and is described as one of the world’s leading schools in martial arts, where some of the greatest fighters in the world have honed their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai skills. Classes are taught by renowned experts with decades of experience in martial arts, including instructors such as Rafael Costa, Fernando Apolinario, Robson Gracie Jr., Thiago Saldanha, Eric Sherman, Jamie Crowder, Bridget Grace, Rob Constance, Jason Yang, Rafael “Sapo” Natal, Mike Jaramillo, Athan Siamas, Fabio Coelho, Eli Evangelista, Elijah Clarke, Danny Scanno, Tim McNamara, and Yorock Anderson, under the leadership of Master Renzo Gracie. The academy’s mission statement is: “We are not in the business of martial arts. We are in the business of building confidence. Confidence not only to defend yourself—we help build the confidence required to face life.”
Families can choose from three types of memberships: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and a BJJ + Muay Thai Combo, and membership is unlimited, allowing as many classes as a schedule permits for one set price. There are no long-term contracts, payments are month-to-month on a credit card, there is an option to freeze membership when out of town, and a 30-day notice is required to cancel. Private MMA training is held at the academy but is not offered to the public and has qualifications. Master Renzo Gracie occasionally appears to teach advanced classes, and these classes are announced via Instagram @renzogracieacademy.
For a free trial class, participants are asked to bring a padlock for belongings, a towel and toiletries if they plan to shower, and flip flops to walk from the locker room to the mats. For a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trial class, the academy provides a gi and belt for the first class; visitors cannot wear another academy’s gi, but blank or brand gis without academy references are allowed, and gis can be rented for $15 if needed. For a Muay Thai trial class, participants are asked to wear shorts, leggings, or spats and a t-shirt or tank top without zippers or buttons, bring wraps and boxing gloves, and may borrow boxing gloves for the first trial; hand wraps are available for purchase at the academy for $10–$15. The academy partners with Fuji Sports, Mike Jaramillo, Rafael “Sapo” Natal, Fabio Coelho, and Robson Gracie Jr.
