RockEDU Science Outreach supports students, educators, research trainees, and scientists in building technical and professional skills, confidence, and STEM community connections, and leads team-based research programs that promote collaboration and inclusive mentorship. RockEDU Science Outreach represents the collective science engagement and research education efforts at The Rockefeller University and works with communities to produce programs and resources that promote inclusive science learning. The program is known for research mentorship skills-building programs for scientists, undergraduates, and high school students, and offers many opportunities for high school students with no previous science experience required. RockEDU also provides educators with tools to instill a lifelong love of scientific exploration in their students and approaches its work by supporting people first, science second, while working toward a future where science benefits all of humanity.

The RockEDU Science Outreach leadership team includes Jen Bohn, PhD, Assistant Director; Emily Costa, PhD, Civic Science Associate; Jeanne Garbarino, PhD, Executive Director; Douglas Heigl, Program Officer; Jessi Hersh, PhD, Program Manager, Student Engagement; and Lizzie Krisch, MA, Community Manager. Staff credentials include Jen Bohn, PhD; Emily Costa, PhD; Jeanne Garbarino, PhD; Jessi Hersh, PhD; and Lizzie Krisch, MA.

RockEDU’s community involvement includes helping local teachers reimagine classroom research, participating in a Rockefeller community symposium that brings together scientists and local gardeners, and partnering with Hunter College to connect undergraduate students with research and professional skills-building opportunities for future internship readiness in STEM.

A student in 2021 stated, “The process of science changed for me because I thought that it was difficult and that I couldn’t be wrong, but this program allowed to be confident in my abilities and in my mistakes as well as understand that the science process is fun.”
