About

SIBSPlace offers expressive arts, art, music, and verbal expressive activities through planned activities led by mental health staff. The program includes verbal activities that focus on sharing experiences and feelings. Children take part in activities that are structured to include expressive arts and verbal activities together.

SIBSPlace was conceptualized to assist children who have brothers and sisters with cancer or another devastating illness, and its mission has expanded to include children who have a parent with a devastating diagnosis. Since opening its doors in October of 2000, SIBSPlace has followed a psychosocial support model based in prevention theory. Robust family participation, encouragement by Mount Sinai South Nassau, and community support led the program to apply for a 501c-3 designation as a charitable foundation, and in collaboration with the hospital, SIBSPlace, Inc. was established in 2015. SIBSPlace, Inc. is now an affiliate of Mount Sinai South Nassau, and an official Board of Directors was approved in 2017 by the Mount Sinai South Nassau Board. The program is led by mental health staff.

The program offers free support for children with a traumatically ill sibling or parent. Focus and attention are placed on the challenges the well sibling faces in coping with their emotional response to having a brother or sister with cancer or another devastating illness, or a parent diagnosed with cancer. Expressive arts and verbal activities are facilitated to enhance self-awareness, self-expression, emotional vocabulary, and to validate feelings and behaviors to help participants develop and practice coping skills. The curriculum is geared to promote resiliency while improving emotional vocabulary, self-expression, and self-awareness. Participants are provided with opportunities for empowerment to help build self-esteem and self-worth. Provision of consistent routines while engaging in an array of enriching activities fosters stability and the development of coping skills while increasing the children’s sense of power and control and reducing feelings of anxiety. The program designs opportunities for the children to build meaningful relationships, externalize feelings, and have them validated while connecting with peers living through similar circumstances. Children are encouraged to have fun while they are being supported through their growth and development. The program states that SIBSPlace is like having an extended family and that it exists to enhance the lives of SIBS kids so they always remember feeling special and important by those who took the time to listen, to hear, and to care. Its tagline is “SIBSPlace…A Place Where A Child Matters Most!”
