The organization states that Boys & Girls Club is an Open Door program where children and teens come and go as they please to and from the facility, and that it is the parents’ responsibility to make sure that their child remains at the Club and does not leave the premises when expected to be there; the Boys & Girls Club is not responsible for walking young people to bus stops. Core programs offered by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady include sports and recreation, education, the arts, health and wellness, workforce readiness, and character and leadership. Afterschool academic support is offered during the school year, and summer programming addresses summer learning loss in areas like math and reading.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady was founded in 1936, then known as the Schenectady Boys Club, and is part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which began in 1860 with Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin, Elizabeth Hammersley, and Louisa Bushnell in Hartford, Connecticut. The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady is “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” The organization operates four active clubhouses, afterschool programs in eight Schenectady City Schools, and a summer camp in Altamont, NY, and reports serving youth ages 6 to 18 at eighteen different sites, including clubhouses, afterschool extensions, city parks, summer camps, and an employment program. It is described as the largest agency provider of services to the youth who need them most in Schenectady County, employs nearly 170 total staff, partners with more than 200 volunteers, and reports serving over 100,000 meals and snacks annually and reaching 7,628 total youth in 2023.

Leadership at the clubhouses includes Unit Director Stephanie Lavalley, Program Director Creig Blyden, and Teen Director Bri Brown at the Adeline Wright Graham Clubhouse; Unit Director Julie Rouse and Program Director Shaquanna Robinson at the Rotterdam Clubhouse; Program Director Cristian Lopez at the Northside Village Clubhouse; and Program Director Faatih Rasul at the Steinmetz Clubhouse. After School Programs are offered in partnership with the Schenectady City School District and include Boys & Girls Clubs staff and SCSD teachers. The organization states that its school programs support social and academic development, create a sense of belonging, promote physical health, build confidence, and provide a safe and supportive environment for children and youth in Schenectady.

A parent testimonial from Becky S. describes the Boys & Girls Club as “an amazing experience” for her family and says it has meant having a place for her kids to go after school and during the summer. She states that when her children are at the Club, she knows they are learning, interacting with peers, receiving life experiences, and building leadership skills that they would not have learned anywhere else, and that her kids are more productive and better people because of the Club.
