About
Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady – Afterschool & Summer Programs offers afterschool and summer programming at multiple clubhouses and school-based sites. At the clubhouses, members have access to gymnasiums, computer labs, theaters, game rooms, and program rooms, and an afternoon snack and dinner are provided. The program includes core areas of activity in sports and recreation, education, the arts, health and wellness, workforce readiness, and character and leadership.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Afterschool programs operate Monday–Friday in the afternoon and early evening during the school year, with additional 9AM–5PM hours on no school days.
• Price: $10/year membership fee for each main clubhouse.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady was founded in 1936, and is part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America movement that began in 1860. The organization’s mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The organization operates four main clubhouses, afterschool programs in eight Schenectady City Schools, and a summer camp in Altamont, NY, and serves youth ages 6 to 18 at eighteen different sites with nearly 170 staff and more than 200 volunteers. Their afterschool programs are run in partnership with the Schenectady City School District and include both Boys & Girls Clubs staff and Schenectady City School District teachers.
The program follows an Open Door model in which children and teens may come and go from the facility, and parents are responsible for making sure their child remains at the Club when expected; the Boys & Girls Club does not walk young people to bus stops. According to a parent testimonial from Becky S., her family has used the Boys & Girls Club for afterschool and summer care, and she reports that her children have had experiences there that they would not have had elsewhere. Leadership at the clubhouses includes a unit director, program directors, and a teen director, such as the team at the Adeline Wright Graham Clubhouse and directors at the Rotterdam, Northside Village, and Steinmetz Clubhouses.
