LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers courses in Session 1 (June 29 – July 10, with no class on July 3) and Session 2 (July 13 – July 24), with some offerings running across both sessions from June 29 – July 24 (no class on July 3). The mission of LIHSA states that emerging artists explore and refine their talents in a master-apprentice, arts-centered community, and that students learn in a safe and supportive environment where they can pursue their artistic passion and discover who they are as individuals and as artists. LIHSA reports that 100% of its students go on to four-year colleges and that 100% of students are eligible to earn college credit. The Joel Foundation provides scholarships for Music or Musical Theatre students to attend LIHSA’s Summer Arts Academy, and fifteen students registering for Music or Musical Theatre are selected to attend all four weeks on full scholarship through The Joel Foundation, with scholarships decided by application and audition. A testimonial from Billy Joel notes that he did not attend a school like this and that it would have been helpful to know there were other people interested in learning similar skills.
