About
Camp Kehilla is a Sid Jacobson JCC experience that includes typical camp activities such as swimming, arts & crafts, and sports. These activities are combined with evidence-based social facilitation techniques in a setting that resembles a neurotypical camp environment.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9am–3:30pm
Camp Kehilla has been a pioneer in neurodivergent camping for more than 25 years and is designed to make the typical camp experience accessible to neurodivergent campers. The program offers a customized summer for children ages 5–21 years with developmental disabilities, Autism spectrum disorder, and other neurodevelopmental conditions, with activities tailored to youth and young adults with a variety of special needs. Its flexible structure is described as promoting the ability for each camper’s individual strengths to flourish, with individualized plans that are designed to grow with campers at each stage of development and a core focus on building social skills, lasting friendships, and self-esteem. The camp operates at a site that includes a brand new shelter with all new amenities in addition to an existing shelter, a completely new swimming pool complex located directly adjacent to the campsite, more space to operate on-site during inclement weather, multiple fields for sports, and multiple playgrounds for recreational free play.
Camp Kehilla is led by Amanda Foglietta, LCSW, Director of the Sandler Family Kehilla Center. Transportation is provided on air-conditioned buses, either door-to-door or through a hub system in partnership with Island Quest Day Camp, depending on location. Snack is provided daily, and kosher lunch options are included in the cost. All first-time campers are required to have an assessment interview before being accepted into camp. One parent stated, “I love Camp Kehilla because for 10 years you have given my son a place to look forward to every summer, an opportunity to truly be himself without judgement, and a place to have fun and socialize.”
