Camp Kehilla
Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds, 75 Colonial Springs Rd, Wheatley Heights, NY 11798
About
Camp Kehilla offers swimming, arts & crafts, and sports as part of its daily camp activities. The program combines these activities with evidence-based social facilitation techniques in an environment that closely resembles that of a neurotypical setting.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9am–3:30pm
Camp Kehilla is a Sid Jacobson JCC experience that is designed to make the typical camp experience accessible to neurodivergent campers. It offers a customized summer for children ages 5–21 years with developmental disabilities, Autism spectrum disorder, and/or other neurodevelopmental conditions, with activities tailored to youth and young adults with a variety of special needs. The program has been a pioneer in neurodivergent camping for more than 25 years and uses individualized plans to grow with campers at each stage of development. Its flexible structure is described as promoting the ability for each camper’s individual strengths to flourish, with a core focus on building social skills, lasting friendships, and self-esteem.
Camp Kehilla operates at a site that includes a brand new shelter with all new amenities in addition to an already existing shelter, a completely new swimming pool complex located directly adjacent to the campsite, more space to operate on-site during inclement weather, multiple fields for sports, and multiple playgrounds for recreational free play. Snack is provided daily, and kosher lunch options are included in the cost. Transportation is provided on air-conditioned buses and, depending on location, this service may either be available on a door-to-door basis or as part of a hub system in partnership with Island Quest Day Camp. All first-time campers are required to have an assessment interview before being accepted into camp.
The leadership team includes Amanda Foglietta, LCSW, Director of the Sandler Family Kehilla Center. One parent states, “I love Camp Kehilla because for 10 years you have given my son a place to look forward to every summer, an opportunity to truly be himself without judgement, and a place to have fun and socialize.”
