The Play Group Theatre states that every class and rehearsal is a unique learning environment and an authentic arts experience, with an emphasis on understanding the thinking process behind each student's work and providing tangible skills and creative freedom to define an artistic voice. The program describes working rigorously and joyously, celebrating both the seriousness of art and the fun of childhood, and describes itself as a community of artists.
The Play Group Theatre is Westchester's Theatre for Children and Teens and is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. It uses the phrases “Preparing Kids for Every Stage in Life SM” and “Live Theatre, It's Part of Living.” The organization has been honored for excellence in arts education and has been voted Best of Westchester's Best Local Theater Group, Best Children's Theater, Best After School Program, and Best Place to Take the Kids.
Through the PGT Generations Program, The Play Group Theatre selects a cohort of students from each of White Plains' five elementary schools to participate in year-round theatre programming, including 2 MainStage productions and the summer camp, throughout their elementary, middle, and high school years. The PGT Scholarship Fund provides seasonal need-based scholarships and supports partnerships with the White Plains Youth Bureau and El Centro Hispano, as well as outreach to local families and children in Westchester communities. The Play Group Theatre is a grantee of ArtsWestchester with funding made possible by Westchester County government with the support of County Executive Kenneth W. Jenkins and the Board of Legislators.
Testimonials describe the quality and impact of the program, including audience feedback on productions such as In Wonderland and Spongebob, and comments from parents, students, alumni, and fans. One audience member calls a Spongebob production the best kids' production they have ever seen, and a parent describes teaching kids to root for each other and creating a community where they are willing to put themselves out there together. Other testimonials state that the theatre company changed a student's life, that years at PGT were the single best gift given to their kids, and that lessons learned at PGT contributed to success in school, including analyzing scripts, understanding characters, being articulate and confident, and public speaking skills.
