For over 20 years, iSPACE has provided STEM educational programs across the Greater Cincinnati area. All programs are taught by trained iSPACE personnel who have Education and/or STEM degrees or extensive experience teaching, and the low pupil/teacher ratio is 15 students per instructor. Programs are age/grade appropriate, align to state grade level standards, and incorporate STEM instructions directly into activities to keep student downtime minimal. iSPACE offers field trips, summer camps, robotics competitions, professional development, and other programs to students, teachers, families, and professionals, and provides a comprehensive list of STEAM programs where students take on roles such as scientists, engineers, and programmers during their time in the program.
iSPACE is a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Trustees made up of area educators, business leaders, and individuals who volunteer their time and talents to further education in STEM disciplines. One of the core values is “open access to all,” and iSPACE is recognized for accommodations for gifted and underserved students regardless of socio-economic status, academic abilities, or physical, emotional, or behavioral limitations, and for strong support encouraging young women in STEM. The iTEACH program, including iTEACH workshops, LEGO education kit training, and an annual professional development seminar, is described as one of the most effective educator professional programs in the region, and the curricula efficacy is independently certified by the University of Cincinnati ESC. iSPACE is grateful for the support of various organizations.
The mission of iSPACE is “To ignite a passion for Science and Technology so that all learners are prepared to thrive in tomorrow’s workforce.” The leadership team includes Sue Hare, iSPACE Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, and Linda Neenan, co-founder and retired Executive Director of iSPACE.
Educator testimonials describe students working in pairs to create a LEGO model and write computer code to make an alligator’s mouth open and shut, and refer to Blast Off Rocketry as a favorite field trip of the year. Another educator reports using iSPACE activities throughout the year and notes a feeling that 5th grade test scores will probably improve over the last year. A teacher describing the iMISSION program notes that each child had a hands-on role in the mission, that the experience could not be duplicated at school or at home, and that instructors were welcoming and related well to students, leading the school to book the field trip again for the next year.
