Girls in Politics Initiative was founded in 2011 and is a for-profit, self-funded company. It does not accept financial support, funding or sponsorships from political parties or special interest groups, and it has no affiliations with any political party or special interest group. The program hosts in-person camps in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom, and hosts virtual classes in these same countries. Camps are hosted twice per year in the largest cities in these countries, and instruction for all camps and virtual classes is in English. Virtual classes are open to all girls, and when registering for a virtual class, attention to the time zone for the class start time is required.
GIP instructors are women with extensive experience working in electoral politics and government, including current and former congressional staffers, parliamentary staffers, political campaign staffers, elected officials, appointed officials, licensed teachers and political science professors. All instructors and staff undergo annual background screenings and are duly registered in accordance with any requirements mandated by law in the markets in which the Girls in Politics Initiative operates. The leadership team includes a General Counsel who can be contacted via email at [email protected].
Volunteer opportunities are not offered, speakers are not booked, and solicitation emails or calls are not requested. Financial aid or scholarships are not offered. Registration fees are non-refundable unless Girls in Politics Initiative cancels a camp or virtual class; if a student is unable to attend, a voucher is issued for the full value of the registration fee paid, and this voucher does not expire and can be used for any future camp or virtual class.
Parent and participant feedback includes reports of girls attending Mother-Daughter Camp Congress, Camp Congress for Girls, and Camp United Nations for Girls in locations such as Washington, DC; New York City; San Francisco; Sydney; London; Toronto; and Manhattan. Testimonials describe girls earning Girl Scout badges, including “Behind the Ballot” badges, and using the webinars to supplement homeschool social studies. Parents and caregivers note participation in classes such as Civics 101 for Girls, United Nations 101 for Girls, and other online programs, and some describe their children building campaigns, planning platforms, and making calls requesting campaign funding during the camps.
