The Lorain County Metropolitan Park District was created in 1957. The Park District was established for the responsible use, enjoyment, and accessibility of every citizen of Lorain County, and it acquires land to promote and demonstrate the wise use of natural resources. It strives to preserve and create a diversity of ecosystems while providing educational and recreational opportunities that are compatible with and promote conservation of these resources. The Park District has steadily grown to over 9,000 acres. It is supported by a 1.6-mill levy property tax, earned income, and a variety of sponsors and gifts, and capital improvements are financed by maintaining operating costs below annual revenues and utilizing grants, donations, and trusts. Through contributions from individuals, groups, corporations, and foundations, the Park District is able to provide a variety of services and facilities beyond the limitations of its tax levy.
