About

Camp Invention is a weeklong STEM experience where kids take part in hands-on STEM adventures, hands-on challenges and open-ended adventures. Participants play high-energy morning games, miniaturize top-secret innovations, safeguard their designs using cryptography, protect their intellectual property and time travel to ensure their ideas are patented and protected. They investigate a series of mischievous pranks, create sleuthing gadgets, collect bits of fluffy fur, reveal a trail of animal tracks, examine suspicious splatters and forensically analyze the evidence. Campers also dive into hands-on buoyancy experiments, paddle their way through salty challenges, sketch, design and build prototypes, create an innovative billboard boat, build a DIY rocket, launch a mission to transform a faraway planet’s atmosphere, terrain and ecosystem, Rover Race to collect important data and samples, design and build inventions for navigating the intense conditions of their planet, hatch a mysterious animal egg and encounter a crystal surprise. The program is led by qualified local educators, and its curricula are created in collaboration with National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees.

Camp Invention has been honoring the spirit of innovation and promoting inventors as role models since 1973. It is founded and supported in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and over 1,500 camp programs run nationwide in schools, community centers and other local facilities. Over the past year, it has partnered with over 1,400 districts nationwide and in Puerto Rico. The program states that its experiences are designed to spark creativity, build confidence and ignite a lifelong love for learning, with a focus on the development of persistence, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills. Camp Invention is part of an organization whose mission is: “We inspire emerging creators and entrepreneurs through our education programs and honor the history of innovation through our museum and Hall of Fame Inductees.”

Parents and caregivers have shared that their children came home beaming with excitement, eager to share what they were learning, and that they saw confidence and a love for learning blossom. Some parents reported that their children, including those who were initially hesitant or quiet, became eager to try new things, be more involved with friends and looked forward to camp each day. Several families noted that their kids enjoyed bringing inventions home, teaching siblings, making friends, engaging in hands-on creative play and remaining interested throughout the long camp day. One grandparent shared that their grandchild gained knowledge, confidence, friends, a sense of cooperative learning and an openness to others’ ideas. A parent of an autistic and gifted child stated that Camp Invention has been wonderful for him to be around other kids who are creative and inventive and that it has helped his social skills. Another parent described Camp Invention as a highlight of their summer as both a parent and educator.
