The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette states that its mission is to serve the community in spirit, mind, and body through child care, sports and fitness programs, summer camps, and philanthropic efforts, while building lasting relationships. Its principles are defined as love, respect, honesty, responsibility, and service. The organization notes that assistance is available to qualified participants because it holds that everyone deserves a chance to be a community member regardless of ability to pay. The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette traces its history back to a first meeting held in 1868 in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Portland. Community involvement activities connected to the YMCA of Columbia-Willamette include the Sherwood Food Pantry at the Sherwood Y, a blood drive with the American Red Cross at the Sherwood YMCA, a volunteer work day, Healthy Kids Day, and a Red Robin fundraising event.
