Bend Learning Center Tutoring has been helping children since 1996 and was founded in the summer of 2005. Its mission is to help children with learning differences understand and reach their potential and to help children succeed in school by building basic skills and motivation through self-efficacy. The program exists to meet the unique needs of Central Oregon students with learning differences such as dyslexia and dysgraphia and brought evidence based reading instruction to Central Oregon 15 years ago for those with dyslexia.
The leadership team includes Mike Marshall, M.Ed., a licensed teacher and reading specialist who provides reading intervention and executive function coaching; Sondra Marshall, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist who provides learning disability evaluations and consultation; and Sanford Shapiro, founder, educational consultant, and learning disabilities specialist. Mike Marshall is a licensed teacher in Oregon and is identified as a highly qualified teacher for grades K–6th, and he completed his Masters of Arts in Teaching in 2010. Dr. Sondra Marshall has been a licensed psychologist in Oregon for 15 years, completed her doctorate in Educational Psychology at The University of Utah in 1997, and worked under Dr. Sam Goldstein and Dr. Sally Ozonoff. The Bend Learning Center background includes academic training in learning disabilities, expertise in early intervention and child development, collaboration with national experts in the field of learning differences and behavioral health, and successful teaching experience in a range of schools and tutorial settings.
Bend Learning Center Tutoring specializes in working with students with dyslexia and those with other academic issues and provides evidence-based reading instruction. It is described as a leader in online dyslexia interventions and other online tutoring classes geared toward reading skills and as a place where evidence based methods meet education. The program uses high-level research, best and effective practices, and over twenty-five years of experience, and it assesses and discovers specific learning strengths and weaknesses and communicates results to parents and students. It teaches learning techniques and strategies that are described as really working and provides a continuum of services to ensure a child's full potential is met. Math lessons are described as visual and illustrative to give the student a real world understanding of math, and math instruction begins with an assessment of math skills and addresses gaps at the student's current level.
