Camp Lutherwood Oregon creates intentional experiences for people to access the outdoors for restoration, play and growth. The camp began in 1959 when a group of pastors in Eugene worked with the Lutheran Layman’s League of Lane County, which purchased 28 acres west of Junction City off Highway 36 to create a Bible camp for Eugene-area children and teens. Camp Lutherwood is an association of Lutheran congregations in Oregon and Southwest Washington and is open year-round. The organization acknowledges that it is located within the traditional homelands of the Kalapuya and Chelamela tribes, whose descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon.
Camp Lutherwood Oregon has a Healthy Forest Plan that focuses on caring for trees, the stream, and wildlife by thinning trees that are too densely planted, improving fish habitat in Luther Creek, increasing access to the forest for educational use, planting new trees and shrubs, and stopping the spread of invasive species. The site hosts vast biodiversity with a deep ecological history, and Camp Lutherwood Oregon has worked with the Natural Resources Conservation Service through a grant to get the Healthy Forest Plan project started. If families are using GPS to reach the camp, the cell signal will be lost about five miles before arrival.
Parents and campers describe Camp Lutherwood Oregon as a place where children come home happy, full of stories and songs, and eager to return. Several parents report that their children make new friends, keep in contact with them, and look forward to attending the next year. Former campers and staff members describe the setting with giant trees and a creek and note that it is used for outdoor school, retreats, and summer weeks at camp. Some campers and parents refer to Camp Lutherwood as a second home and the number one place to spend a summer, and one parent notes that their children now hope to be camp counselors one day.
