Mini Camp is a three-day, two-night shortened version of the traditional summer camp program. Crew Camp includes a behind-the-scenes look at the camp experience and a day trip to go rafting. L.I.T. Compass Camp is for campers who have experienced extreme trauma or loss, whose community has been impacted by disaster, or who are in need of extra support from a hard situation, and it includes smaller cabin group sizes, mental health providers, and extra training for staff. Compass Camp is not a faith-based program, while Camp Lutherwood Oregon is a faith-based camp. Camp Lutherwood Oregon is open to all people for year-round camps, retreats, outdoor school, and events.
Camp Lutherwood Oregon creates intentional experiences for people to access the outdoors for restoration, play and growth. In 1959, a group of pastors in Eugene had a vision for a Bible camp for their kids, and the Lutheran Layman’s League of Lane County purchased 28 acres west of Junction City to create the camp for Eugene area children and teens. Camp Lutherwood is an association of Lutheran congregations in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
Camp Lutherwood Oregon is located within the traditional homelands of the Kalapuya and Chelamela tribes and has a Healthy Forest Plan aimed at caring for trees, stream, and wildlife through thinning trees, improving fish habitat in Luther Creek, increasing access to the forest for educational use, planting new trees and shrubs, and stopping the spread of invasive species. It is described as a vibrant community of spirituality and hospitality, strengthened by diversity.
Parents and campers describe Camp Lutherwood Oregon as a place where children come home happy, full of stories and songs, and where staff care for what they do. Former campers and staff describe the giant trees and the creek as feeling like home and refer to camp as a second home and a place to spend the summer. Parents report that their children make new friends, keep in contact with friends they have made, and look forward to attending the next year. One parent notes that both a 14-year-old and a 12-year-old spoke of meaningful connections with other campers and leaders, and another parent shares that their kids were so happy at camp that one child felt depressed for a week after camp and now wants to be a camp counselor one day. Adult participants describe comfortable cabins, delicious food, and great staff.
