Camp Lutherwood Oregon Summer Camp began in 1959 when a group of pastors in Eugene worked with the Lutheran Layman’s League of Lane County, which purchased 28 acres to create a Bible camp for children and teens. Camp Lutherwood Oregon states that it creates intentional experiences for people to access the outdoors for restoration, play and growth and is guided by Christian faith and Lutheran roots, with stated values that include generous hospitality, equitable access and diversity, balancing play and discovery with reflection and restoration, responsible stewardship, open space for learning and exploration of the natural world, and fun, play and laughter. The camp is an association of Lutheran congregations in Oregon and Southwest Washington and partners with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), which has provided a grant for its Healthy Forest Plan project that includes thinning trees, improving fish habitat in Luther Creek, increasing access to the forest for educational use, planting new trees and shrubs, and stopping the spread of invasive species. Camp Lutherwood Oregon notes that Compass Camp is not a faith-based program, while the broader camp is faith-based, and that Compass Camp is designed for campers who have experienced extreme trauma or loss, whose community has been impacted by disaster, or who are in need of extra support from a hard situation, with smaller cabin group sizes, mental health providers, and extra training for staff.

Camp Lutherwood Oregon Summer Camp states that it is open to all people for year-round camps, retreats, outdoor school, and events and that families are invited to join the closing campfire followed by a picnic dinner for full week programs. One parent of a camper reports that their child always has the best time at camp, comes home happy and full of stories and songs, and that it is clear to them that staff care about what they do, and another parent notes that their kids come home with happy memories, many stories, and look forward to attending the next year. A parent of campers shares that both of their kids spoke of meaningful connections with other campers and leaders and that their daughter described Lutherwood as feeling emotionally safer than other overnight camps she has attended and appreciated how welcoming and accepting everyone was. A first-time upper elementary camper described their week as the most fun they had in a long time, and another parent said their kids were so happy at camp that one child was depressed for a week after camp and now wants to be a camp counselor one day.
