Best Martial Arts Institute has been Eugene’s premier martial arts school since 1988 and is in its 36th year, and it was originally known as “The Dojo” when it opened in downtown Eugene in 1988. The institute states that it trains with intensity, sincerity, humility, joy, and humor, and that it adheres to the tenets of modesty, perseverance, self-control, indomitable spirit, and etiquette. It describes itself as a place where teachers and dedicated students pursue martial arts with passion, where everyone is treated with courtesy and respect, and where everyone is encouraged to challenge themselves while appreciating who they are.
Best Martial Arts Institute is under the guidance of founder Shihan Alan Best, who spent six years as an uchideshi (apprentice), regularly training over six hours a day. All aikido instructors are certified black belts with the Aikikai Foundation, the Aikido world headquarters in Japan, and Aikido of Eugene is a member of the California Aikido Association. Chuck Hauk, the dojo-cho (chief instructor) of Aikido of Eugene, holds the rank of Rokudan (6th degree black belt) from the Aikikai Foundation. Aikido instructor Mark Kruger is licensed to teach Shinto Ryu Iai Batto Jutsu, holds the rank of 5th Dan in Aikido, and attained his nidan (2nd degree black belt) in judo in 2025. Phil Martinez was awarded the rank of Sandan (3rd degree black belt) in 2023, and Sasha Kruger achieved the rank of Sandan (3rd degree black belt) in 2025 and was awarded the rank of sankyu in Shinto Ryu Iai-Battojutsu.

It also describes itself as Eugene’s biggest training facility and one of the Northwest’s largest and most modern martial arts training facilities, with three matted training areas, specialized rooms with heavy bags, makiwara, chin-up bars, crash pads, and a climbing rope, and all training floors covered with Swain Sportsmats Brand Gold Medal Tatami, which it describes as the best martial arts mats in the world.
