National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics is a nonprofit community hub that has served the families of Lane County since 1973 and is celebrating over 50 years of gymnastics. The gym has separate areas for recreational programs and competitive teams, a life-size pirate ship with a 75-foot ocean mural, a foam pit and trampolines, kids-sized event equipment, and complete boys’ and girls’ apparatus for all levels. The lobby includes snacks, drinks, fast internet, live-streaming TVs, and space to host two private birthday parties at once for up to 25 guests each.
The program’s mission is to inspire confidence, strength, and joy in every child through gymnastics in a safe, positive, and engaging environment, using fun, fitness, and heart centered coaching to support healthy bodies, confident minds, and lasting life skills. National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics has produced 17 Olympians, more than 50 national champions, and many college scholarship athletes, and the gym has been recognized nationally and internationally for both excellence and creativity. Recent coaches have been recognized as Oregon Coaches of the Year, and staff are USA Gymnastics Safety Certified, First Aid and CPR trained, and undergo background checks.
National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics was founded in 1973 by Richard (Dick) Mulvihill and Linda Metheny Mulvihill, who is a three-time Olympian and two-time Olympic Judge. The gym operated from 1973–1993 at 13th & Olive across from the old Eugene Library, from 1993–2011 on Shelley Street in Springfield, and from 2011 to today at its current Eugene home. The Emerald Team Challenge is described as one of the biggest gymnastics competitions in the Northwest, with over 50 clubs participating, custom leotards for all girls gymnasts, specialized dry fit shirts for all boys gymnasts, lots of prizes and giveaways, and live scoring on Score Cat Online or App.
A parent testimonial from Liz Gill states that her kids are having fun, are physically active and challenged, and are learning more than just gymnastics at National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics, and she describes it as a place for both preschool-aged children with lots of energy and serious school-aged children who want to go far in the sport. Office Manager Ingrid Riley says that National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics has helped many kids, including her own children and grandchildren, find more than sports, describing it as a second home where they are known, encouraged, and grow in confidence and character.
