JSMA Youth and Family Art Programs
Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, 1430 Johnson Lane, Eugene, OR 97403
About
JSMA Youth and Family Art Programs include art classes for elementary and secondary school students in the JSMA's art studio, as well as art classes held off-site at local elementary and middle schools during the school year. The program also offers art camps during school breaks, summer camps for young artists, and Family Days that feature art projects inspired by museum exhibitions, music and theatrical performances, and family-friendly tours. Families can use ArtPacks for self-guided gallery activities, and can access JSMA Creates, a series of object-based art lessons to do at home, including “Your Room, Your Space,” “Abstract with a KAWS,” and “Fourth Dimensional Drawings.”
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Open Wednesday–Sunday with varying hours; each week of summer camp concludes with an art exhibition that families can attend
The JSMA at the University of Oregon states that its Education and Outreach Programs, which include these youth and family offerings, are supported in part by the Cheryl and Allyn Ford Educational Outreach Endowment Fund. The museum opened its doors to the public in 1933. The leadership team includes Olivia Miller, Executive Director; Kurt Neugebauer, Associate Director of Administration and Exhibitions; Lesley Williams, Executive Assistant; Lisa Abia-Smith, Director of Education/Outreach; Gabrielle Miller, Museum Educator; and Rosemarie Oakman, Museum Program Manager for Well-Being and Community Engagement. The JSMA’s mission is to foster global understandings of art and cultural histories, working with faculty, students, and communities to contribute to a more just, equitable, and sustainable world. The JSMA describes itself as being about community on-campus and off, collaborating with partners to build community and celebrate diversity, and shares member comments such as, “Life without the arts would be a desert.”
