The Junior Program Skills Challenge is held on August 27th, with competitors and volunteers asked to arrive by 4:00pm and championship play beginning around 4:30pm or as soon as all players are ready. The Junior Golf Awards Banquet, including the awards ceremony and BBQ, is scheduled for August 27th beginning at or around 6:00pm. All children are encouraged to bring their own clubs, and Michelbook has a limited number of junior clubs (no sets) available; families interested in ordering a set can work with staff in the pro shop, with golf club shipments taking about fourteen days. Juniors planning to play are asked to check in with the golf shop before play and after the clinic, and parents, guardians, volunteers, and juniors are expected to follow the Michelbook dress code, including collared shirts with neat shorts or pants for boys and men, mid-thigh length shorts or skorts and collared sleeveless tops for girls and women, no running shorts or tights on the course, and caps worn in the conventional (not reversed) manner.
The program’s stated purpose is to provide Michelbook Country Club junior golfers with programs to create lifelong golfers who learn the joy of playing the game of golf. Its mission is to attract, maintain, and grow junior golfers and to develop young golfers who understand, appreciate, and thrive in the golf community as players of the game. The objectives include teaching golf fundamentals through organized lessons and golf course play, expanding each golfer’s knowledge of rules and etiquette, providing hands-on experience, motivating and encouraging interested junior golfers, recognizing that players develop skills at an individualized pace, providing fun and friendship in a healthy environment, and creating opportunities for those who choose to take their game to a higher level. The Junior Golf Membership Program goals include providing junior golfers in the community the opportunity to practice and play on a great course.
Michelbook Country Club junior golf programs take place on an 18-hole golf course with 5 par 3s and 5 par 5s, a par of 72, and a yardage of 6,572, with large redwood, cedar, and oak trees, strategically placed water hazards, and greens that are typically fast and firm and described as some of the best putting surfaces in the area. Facilities available to junior golfing members include a short game practice area, a practice putting green, a range deck, a fully stocked golf shop, a food and beverage operation in the clubhouse, and access to practice facilities and the course seven days a week after 2:00pm. The club opened with 9 holes in 1964, added a second nine and remodeled part of the original nine in the mid-1980s, and has over 50 years of operations. The club hosts several events each year for the Oregon Golf Association, including the Michelbook Junior Classic.
The leadership team includes General Manager Luc Miller, Operations Coordinator Kiersten Gunn, Food and Beverage Director April Salazar, Membership Sales Director/Golf Operations Manager Mitchel Wilson, and Superintendent Chris Burdon, with junior golf contact listed as Michael Blinco.
