The camps are led by USPTA licensed coaches and follow USPTA professional coaching and development practices. The leadership team includes Mitchell Miyashiro, Head Men’s Tennis Coach and Tennis Director at the George Fox Tennis Center, and Nanase Ebisu, Head Tennis Professional and Assistant Coach for the George Fox University Men’s Tennis Team. Coach Mitchell is a 2016 George Fox graduate, returned to lead the program in spring 2024 as interim head coach, and was officially named head coach in summer 2024, and he is also PTR certified. Mitchell has served as the Head Teaching Professional and Tennis Director at the George Fox Tennis Center since June 2023 and previously served as head coach at Tualatin High School for six years, while Nanase has over six years of coaching experience.
The George Fox Tennis Center states that it is built on the desire to serve the community and families through the sport of tennis and to make the sport accessible to players of all skill levels with no memberships or initiation fees and what it describes as the best prices in the Pacific Northwest for high-quality, professionally licensed coaching and instruction that is personal and caring. The center also offers public rentals, group lessons, leagues, tournaments, private lessons, and other camps, and notes a low coach-to-camper ratio of 6:1 for personalized work, GFU shirts for all camp registrants, and prizes for winners of camp competitions. The George Fox Tennis Center is described in community feedback as a huge asset to the local tennis community.
Program credentials include USPTA licensed coaching and a staff that includes a PTR certified coach. The broader George Fox tennis program has reported that Lars Schmassmann was named Northwest Conference Player of the Year, the Bruins secured the team’s fifth consecutive Northwest Conference title and extended their unbeaten conference streak to 36 matches, and the team earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Testimonials from adults, a community tennis coordinator, a middle school player, and a parent describe the coaching as affordable, flexible, and responsive, and mention that players have fun and enjoy the lessons.
