Since opening in 1992, the Oregon Coast Aquarium has connected over 16 million visitors with the Pacific Ocean and operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Its mission states that it has supported marine wildlife and fostered environmental stewardship through education programs, community partnerships, and rehabilitation efforts for over three decades. The Aquarium is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums and is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 aquariums in the United States. It is home to 15,000 animals spanning 300 different species and offers live cameras featuring sharks, puffins, and otters, along with a Nature Play Area, a new Jelly Gallery, a new Moon Jelly Pillar in the lobby, and a Kids Play Area.
The Aquarium’s community involvement includes partnerships with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz for naming the Sis-Xa Xwee-Nish Marine Wildlife Center, as well as partnerships with several scientific, educational, and environmental organizations. It also partners with institutions of higher learning, wildlife organizations, and local veterinarians to provide practical research opportunities for veterinary students, and it plans to offer a veterinary student practicum within the new Marine Wildlife Center. The Sis-Xa Xwee-Nish Marine Wildlife Center is one of three facilities in the Pacific Northwest, and the only one in Oregon, authorized to provide critical care to endangered marine animals such as sea turtles, Guadalupe fur seals, and snowy plovers.
