Girls Inc. Eureka! is a program of Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest, whose mission is to build a new generation of strong, smart, and bold leaders in Portland, Seattle, and SW Washington by equipping girls with resources, relationships, and learning opportunities. The program is open to youth who identify as girls, non-binary, transgender, or youth who are currently exploring their gender identity or expression, with priority given to First Generation youth, BIPOC youth, LGBTQIA+ youth, and youth from low-income households. Cohorts of youth stay together throughout their five years in the program, and activities are hands-on, minds-on, untimed, and ungraded. Youth and their families are introduced to the requirements, processes, and resources that will make higher education and STEM employment more accessible. The Eureka! program is conducted in English, and translations are provided for family members’ comfort and understanding; translation assistance is available by contacting [email protected].
The Eureka! program is described as a community-wide effort that involves partnerships and interactions with schools, community-based organizations, and local businesses and corporations, with partners providing volunteer support, field trips, and funding. A Shorewood youth participant stated, “I love Girls Inc. PNW because it's a space where I can be whoever I want to be.” The PDX Eureka! Manager is Sara Fenton, and the SWWA Eureka! Manager is Rose Flores.
