Hollywood Dance has been a fixture in the NE Portland Hollywood neighborhood for over 30 years. The studio describes itself as non-competitive and family-oriented, with enrollment currently open for new students and all enrollment handled through a Parent Portal on a first come, first served basis. It states a commitment to smaller class sizes and personalized attention, and notes that when a student joins, they become part of the studio’s family. The studio’s mission is to provide students of all ages with an environment that is safe, welcoming, and nurturing, to work on developing each dancer’s technical and performance skills, and to inspire creativity, build self-confidence, and develop strong work ethics inside and outside of the studio. Hollywood Dance states that its classes, curriculum, performances, and costumes are family-friendly and age-appropriate, and that it is dedicated to creating an atmosphere where people of all ages and levels can find joy through the dance experience.

The Small Steps: Pre-Ballet & Tap Combo program is described as a specially designed class for 3- to 6-year-olds that introduces simple dance steps and movements with the feeling of ballet and tap while protecting young muscles, bones, and joints. Ballet classes are described as classical ballet tailored to each student’s age and ability, with special attention to proper technique and body placement. Jazz classes combine traditional jazz technique with stretching and strengthening to cover stylized, theatrical, contemporary, and lyrical styles of dance. Contemporary is described as an expressive style that blends elements of jazz, lyrical, and ballet, focusing on self-expression, choreography, and connecting mind and body through fluid movements; students must have previous Ballet/Jazz experience and be enrolled in Ballet/Jazz at the same time to take Contemporary. Hip Hop classes incorporate a fusion of dance styles set to age-appropriate hip hop, R&B, and pop music, working on basic rhythm and coordination and breaking down steps into energetic routines.

The leadership team includes Joni, Owner/Director, who is associated with Ballet and Pointe, and Rachel, Artistic Director, who is associated with Hip Hop and Jazz. The studio states that it is about its students rather than its numbers and that it works to provide a well-rounded dance education that develops dancers’ technical skills and performance qualities.
