About

Kids Martial Arts (Youth Power Program) at Northwest Fighting Arts includes kids’ Martial Arts classes that draw from Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do, and Jiu Jitsu. The Youth Power program uses these three arts in a structured curriculum that has been in use since the early 1990s.

• Ages: 5–13 years old

Since 1994, Northwest Fighting Arts has operated as a Portland martial arts school and has continued for more than 29 years. The program is led by founder Jeff Patterson, who also founded the Portland Tai Chi Academy, and the head instructor is a third-degree black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Instructors in the program are certified under the Thai Boxing Association. The kids’ martial arts program focuses on developing the whole person, with an emphasis on respect, self-discipline, and character building, and uses systematic physical, mental, and emotional challenges so that students gain confidence with each success and learn the habit of striving, goal setting, and goal achievement. Northwest Fighting Arts offers a free personal lesson for first-time visitors, and if a family joins, the first 30 days are free and the uniform is provided at no cost. The organization states that its mission is to offer classes that increase overall health, strength, confidence, and capabilities, with safety and education named as primary goals. One long-term student reports training with Sifu Jeff for about 10 years, describes continuing to learn multiple disciplines at the academy, and credits this training with feeling stronger and more positive with each passing year.
