About

Literacy Liberators is a community-based, high-impact tutoring program. The program offers community-based, high-impact tutoring as a core activity. Literacy Liberators equips community members with tools, skills, and resources to advance literacy outcomes and achieve economic mobility.

Founded in 1971 as Open Meadow, the organization now runs Literacy Liberators as part of its ongoing work. Its mission states that every child deserves to learn and grow in an environment that meets them where they are, in response to systemic inequities and the limitations of one-size-fits-all education. The mission also states a focus on creating a more equitable future where underestimated and underserved youth feel seen, supported, and empowered at every stage of their academic journey. The organization has partnerships with Reynolds School District, Portland Public Schools, Portland Children’s Levy, Gresham-Barlow School District, David Douglas School District, and Centennial School District. Testimonials from school and family partners describe the broader Open School and Step Up work that surrounds this program.
