About

Oregon Grappling Arts Kids’ Martial Arts offers kids’ martial arts classes that focus on Brazilian jiu jitsu, including gi and no gi BJJ. The program is part of a broader schedule at Oregon Grappling Arts that also includes women’s jiu jitsu and adult Brazilian jiu jitsu classes.

• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Kids’ classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays for ages 5–8 and 9+ in the gi during late afternoon; on Thursdays for ages 5+ in a no gi competition class by instructor invitation; and on Saturdays and Sundays for ages 3–4, 5–8, and 9+ in morning sessions with separate gi and no gi days.
• Price: Out-of-town or vacationing youth visitors who currently train at a BJJ gym may attend for a $30 per day drop-in fee; prospective students ages 5+ considering a membership may use a three-day free trial, and prospective members ages 3–4 may attend one free trial class before enrolling; all memberships are month-to-month with no contract, no commitment, no activation or initiation fees, and there are family and student discounts as described.

Every kids’ class on the schedule is taught by a black belt instructor with extensive competition experience, an upper-belt IBJJF No Gi World Championship gold medal at the adult or master 1 level, and years of experience working with youth students. Oregon Grappling Arts states that it does not assign youth classes to lower-belt instructors. The kids’ program is led by instructors Hannah Sharp, Eddie Jamrog, and Courtney Block, who are described as some of the most accomplished no gi BJJ competitors in the Portland area, with championships and podium finishes in nearly all competitive rulesets.

The program’s mission is to provide students with what it describes as the highest level of jiu jitsu instruction in a safe and friendly community. Oregon Grappling Arts notes that it welcomes anyone interested in beginning a martial arts practice and that no previous athletic experience is needed to start training. The academy states that its ages 3–4 classes have reached full capacity as of November 2024 and that it no longer accepts local drop-in students in youth classes, with this policy taking effect in 2024 on different dates for the 3–4, 5–8, and 9+ age groups. Forms of payment accepted include all major credit cards and cash.
