The mission of the Pre-College Art and Design Programs at PNCA is to give high school students ages 14 to 18 the chance to explore art and design in a real college setting. The program is taught by professional artists, illustrators, animators, and designers, with support from current PNCA professors and industry-leading guests. Classes combine hands-on instruction with mentorship, community, and real-world relevance, and students can choose from programs in animation, indie media, design, and studio art. All Summer Intensives include high-quality documentation of student work and a wrap-up portfolio review with PNCA Admissions.
Students can build an art and design portfolio for college applications and can grow their creative skills while experiencing life at one of the top ranked art and design schools in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Foundation Intensive students spend two weeks in studio art, including drawing, painting, ceramics, mixed media, and digital art workshops, and curate and present a group exhibition in one of PNCA’s galleries. Animation Intensive students spend two weeks focused on stop-motion animation, with workshops in storyboarding, character design, and fabrication, and showcase their work in PNCA’s Mediatheque. Work takes place in a studio environment in downtown Portland, where PNCA is described as the front porch for Portland’s vibrant creative scene, and the college is part of Willamette University and is described as the foremost art and design school in the Northwest and a major hub for Oregon’s creative community.
