About

Youth Basketball Programs includes a basketball league with evening practices and Saturday games, as well as basketball games, basketball practices, and basketball skills classes. The program also offers Basketball FUNdamentals, which focuses on shooting, passing, dribbling, and scrimmage.

• Ages: 5–11 years old
• Schedule: Winter 2026 League meets once a week for 50-minute evening practices with games on Saturdays; Spring Basketball League registration opens at 12pm on January 13 for members and January 15 for everyone
• Price: $250/session (includes uniform)

Winter 2026 league practices for 2nd–3rd grade teams are scheduled as follows: Team 1 on Mondays 6:00–6:50pm, Team 2 on Tuesdays 6:00–6:50pm, Team 3 on Wednesdays 6:00–6:50pm, and Team 4 on Thursdays 6:00–6:50pm. Practices for 4th–5th grade teams are scheduled as follows: Team 5 on Mondays 7:00–7:50pm, Team 6 on Tuesdays 7:00–7:50pm, Team 7 on Wednesdays 7:00–7:50pm, and Team 8 on Thursdays 7:00–7:50pm. Weekly basketball skills classes are planned to return in Fall 2026, and all basketball classes and teams are mixed gender. Registration is individual rather than by team, there are 12 slots per team, and membership is not required to join the league or to coach.

All teams are led by trained volunteer parent coaches, and all coaches must pass a background check. Volunteer parent coaches have extra training opportunities from Portland Trail Blazers staff and access to official NBA lesson plans that are scaled for co-ed youth leagues. Players wear official Portland Trail Blazers jerseys that they keep, and the price includes the uniform. The program uses new equipment and includes Basketball FUNdamentals sessions that emphasize fun and include scrimmage time.

Membership is not required to participate, but having a membership grants early registration before the general public. Members receive a priority registration link by email before registration opens, can use all facilities, and can get extra practice time during open gym. Facility hours are Monday–Friday 6am–8pm, Saturday 7am–5pm, and Sunday 7am–5pm. For 2026 holiday hours, the facility is open 7am–2pm on January 1, Memorial Day, November 25, and December 31, and closed on Juneteenth, July 4, Labor Day, November 26, December 24, and December 25.

Youth Basketball Programs is offered by Northeast Community Center, an independent non-profit community center with a rich, century-old history of intergenerational impact. The center’s mission is to build and support a thriving and resilient intergenerational community in NE Portland by providing physical space and community-responsive programs that promote well-being, foster relationships, empower individuals, and center equity. The program is supported through a partnership with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Jr. NBA, and Portland Children’s Levy sponsors the league.
