About
Capital Futbol Club offers soccer programming that includes the Farr Post Goalkeeping Camp, Winter Youth Indoor Session I, and Winter Youth Indoor Session II. The program uses the Jason Sharp Center, which is a new indoor facility with a new field and classroom space.
Capital Futbol Club states that its mission is to develop excellent soccer players and responsible citizens, using soccer as a vehicle for enriching kids’ lives. The club describes itself as more than a soccer club, using the phrase “mas que un club de futbol,” and as a family from every background that gets stronger through training and competition. It uses three pillars it calls Better Soccer, Better People, Stronger Community. The club describes itself as pioneers of soccer in the capital city, built on a tradition of excellence and developing champions on and off the field.
Capital FC was originally founded as Salem United Soccer Club in June 1993, with its original by-laws adopted on July 6, 1993, and an official start-up date of September 1, 1993. In 2004, the club merged programs with the Cascade Surge to form Cascade FC. In 2011, the board facilitated a long-term partnership with Coerver Coaching, which it describes as the world’s number one soccer skills teaching method. In the fall of 2013, Cascade FC began talks with the Portland Timbers and became one of the first Timbers Alliance partner clubs in Oregon, and the club and the Timbers agreed to end their formal partnership in 2022. The club acquired the rights to the Timbers U23 USL2 franchise in 2017.
The club reports that through soccer it helps nearly 6,000 children in its community reach their full potential and that it uses soccer as a way to create a diverse, strong, connected, and caring community. It notes that its former Timbers Alliance partnership provided access to coach education and curriculum and a connection with the Timbers and Thorns Academy. Capital Futbol Club is involved in supporting the Sandoval family as they mourn the passing of Meah from the 2012 Girls Academy. The club asks the community to help complete the Jason Sharp Center and mentions a $25,000 donor match.
Capital Futbol Club highlights that it brought home its third national title in four years. It states that its 208B ECNL-RL squad was crowned USYS Presidents Cup National Champions and that CFC captured Oregon’s first-ever USYS Presidents Cup National Title. It also notes that the Timbers U23 were Western Conference Champions in 2021.
The leadership team includes BJ Noble as CFC Director of Operations. The listed board and officer roles include Eric Johansen as President and Board of Directors member from South Salem, Chuck Schumaker as Vice-President and Board of Directors member from Sprague, Ron Roach as Secretary and Board of Directors member from McKay, Barb Southard as Treasurer/Registrar and Board of Directors member from Sprague, Phil Barrett as ex officio Chairman, Ryan Janac as Board of Directors member from McKay, Bob Arpin and John Plechl as Board of Directors members from North Salem, and Ken Husby as Board of Directors member from South Salem.
