Pelada Football Academy is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization that serves youth soccer players in the Eugene/Springfield area and uses proceeds from its merch store to invest in equipment such as balls, goals, and cones. The mission of Pelada Football Academy is to support the education of young people through soccer by fostering values of positive leadership, team ethics, and fair play alongside the technical and tactical skills of the game. Programming is based around a four-season structure, players are not cut based on ability, every player plays at least 50% of each match, and clinics are open to any player, whether a Pelada Football Academy member or not. Training-only options are available for tournament teams for players who are unable to participate in the games, and players are grouped by birth year and age up after the end of the spring season, with summer tournaments marking the start of the new seasonal year at the new age level.
Foundations Academy emphasizes fundamentals of movement, coordination, and technique through exercises and small-sided games, and meets once a week in a small group setting led by a Pelada Football Academy staff coach and members of the youth Coach Development Academy. Pelada Football Academy uses a curriculum and club practices intended to improve each player’s standard of play and ability to compete at a high level, and it states an emphasis on positive, inclusive, and supportive environments for players with insistence on fair play. Coaches are certified and participate in ongoing education.
Pelada Football Academy’s leadership team includes Director Joey Garah, Registrar Brenda Wisnewski, President Beth Atkerson, Vice President Mark Nash, Secretary Katie Leonard, Treasurer Austin Miller, and Directors at Large Britni Jessup, Jason Atkerson, and Diertra Lomeli. The organization states that it aims to increase and diversify opportunities for competition locally by collaborating with other organizations, supporting leagues, and hosting tournaments and community events. Required garments for some teams include specific jersey and sock colors and shorts, which can be tried on and ordered at Tursi Soccer Shop.
