About
Northwest Reading Clinic, Inc. offers daily one-on-one instruction that focuses on diagnosing and treating difficulties with comprehension, reading, and spelling, including dyslexia. Students work on developing visual memory for letters, sight word recognition, vocabulary, writing skills, and study skills, and can also receive help with schoolwork and writing. Northwest Reading Clinic, Inc. opened in 1985 and is celebrating 40 years in business. It specializes in diagnosing and treating difficulties with comprehension, reading, and spelling, including dyslexia, and provides one-on-one instruction using specialized methods that give direct instruction in the building blocks for reading, spelling, and comprehension. The clinic works with students aged five through adult and now offers services in person, online, and in hybrid formats. Students work one-on-one with experienced, thoroughly trained clinicians, and the clinic is able to provide help with schoolwork and writing for students who need extra guidance.
All Northwest Reading Clinic staff have a Bachelor’s degree, and many also have teaching credentials or Master’s degrees. All staff have passed a thorough background check, and the majority of staff have been with the clinic for ten years or more. The leadership team includes Director and Owner Leslie J.W. Greger; Vancouver Manager and Clinician Stephanie Georgilas; School Projects Manager and Clinician Regan Briggs; Founder Diane M.W. Budden (1985–2025); and clinicians and staff Helena, Lauri, Michelle, Staci, Aimee, Zoe, Eve, Ashley, Mary, Abi, and Kirsten in Tigard, Vancouver, and school/online roles.
The clinic’s mission states that it specializes in diagnosing and treating difficulties with comprehension, reading, and spelling, including dyslexia, and that its standardized academic testing is used to accurately define each student’s strengths and weaknesses and identify factors in the learning environment. The mission also states that the clinic strives to match each student with a clinician whose unique gifts and background make learning at Northwest Reading Clinic effective and fun, and that its goal is to create a welcoming and supportive environment for every person seeking services.
In 2002, Northwest Reading Clinic paired with The Smith Foundation to offer the same services free of charge to two public elementary schools in North Portland, and it continues to serve two elementary schools in North Portland. The clinic states that it is honored to continue serving metro communities across Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington. It is a member in good standing. The clinic uses a combination of techniques, including the suite of Lindamood-Bell programs, to treat students with learning disabilities.
A parent testimonial from Mary H. describes a student named Emily who scored below grade level on a state reading test before attending Northwest Reading Clinic, and then scored above grade level on the next state reading test after attending the clinic, and also notes the professionalism, one-on-one work environment, and learner-friendly atmosphere.
