About
Camp Rosenbaum offers a week of activities that include art and science projects, leather crafts, horseback riding, fishing, trips to the ocean, a sand castle contest, and time to tell stories around the campfire. Campers spend a week experiencing new adventures together as part of this program.
• Ages: 9–10 years old
• Schedule: Campers spend a week experiencing new adventures
Since 1970, Camp Rosenbaum has offered a unique experience to low-income children from Oregon and Southwest Washington and has provided a free camp to over 7,000 youth. Camp Rosenbaum was inspired by its late founder, Brigadier General (Ret.) Fred M. Rosenbaum, and has become an annual event for over 50 years. The program is open to youth ages 9–10 whose parents live in housing authority properties or who participate in the Section 8 rent assistance program, and campers are recruited by the participating housing authority, which typically opens recruitment in March and selects campers in April. Camp Rosenbaum has given more than 6,500 children a memorable overnight camp experience and has volunteer hours exceeding 230,000.
The program has a one-to-one camper-to-staff ratio, with staff who have decades of experience. All staff and counselors are volunteers, and they come from a partnership between the Oregon National Guard, Portland Police Bureau, and Home Forward. Camp Rosenbaum states that its goal is to meet the individual needs of each child within the structure of the program while maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all children and staff, and it does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, marital status, familial status, national origin, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, source of income, or need for special care.
The Camp Rosenbaum Fund is a community-building nonprofit whose mission is to provide life-enhancing opportunities for low-income young people through mentoring, camp, and athletic programs, and its programs are designed to instill good character traits, hope, and a sense that anything is possible with education, hard work, and good choices. Camp Rosenbaum has received national acclaim and awards over the years.
