About

STARBASE Camp Rilea offers fun, hands-on experiments in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, including launching rockets, mixing chemicals, and programming robots while functioning as teams of scientists and engineers. Students also use computer aided design, 3D printing, laser printing, and physics simulations, and they learn about navigation and nature as part of the program. The students spend five days launching rockets, mixing chemicals, exploring computer aided design, programming robots and functioning as teams of scientists and engineers.

• Ages: 8–17 years old
• Schedule: During the school year, STARBASE Oregon provides 25 hours of engaging, inquiry-based and hands-on STEAM instruction for fifth grade students, and STARBASE Camp Rilea runs a five-day session format and conducts a series of STEM summer camps for children going into grades 3–12.

STARBASE Camp Rilea has been serving the Northern Oregon coast since 2019. STARBASE Oregon is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics education program for fifth grade students that provides 25 hours of engaging, inquiry-based and hands-on STEAM instruction. The STARBASE Academies are entirely Federally funded by the Department of Defense and are all located on military installations, and evidence based evaluations of STARBASE participants show a significant improvement in understanding, interest and ability in math and science, which has led to increased enthusiasm in pursuing further STEAM education. STARBASE Camp Rilea currently serves 5th and 6th graders during the school year, conducts STEM summer camps for children going into grades 3rd–12th, and offers an afterschool program to local middle schools. It works in collaboration with organizations including Consejo Hispano, Northwest Regional ESD, and the Astoria School District special education department to provide outreach for the community’s children, and currently sees schools from Astoria, Warrenton, Hammond, Seaside, Gearhart, Knappa, Jewell, Cannon Beach, Clatskanie, and Naselle, and is in talks with Ocean Park. STARBASE Oregon serves school districts in Oregon and Washington and is scheduled to deliver 25 hours of STEAM curriculum to thousands of Oregon and Washington youth this school year, with four academies serving communities across Oregon and delivering hands-on educational opportunities to hundreds of young learners every year. Unique features of STARBASE Camp Rilea include a newly remodeled school building updated with the latest technology, a classroom for hands-on experiments, a computer lab for computer aided design, 3D printing, laser printing, and physics simulations, and surrounding acreage used for learning about navigation and nature, and the school is often visited by a large herd of elk. The technology rich environment allows students to experience first-hand real world application of STEAM skills, the curriculum is unavailable to students outside of the STARBASE Academies, and the STARBASE Academies are integral to the school districts’ STEAM education pipeline.
